Childhood and family

Jang was raised alongside her three-year older sister in Taiwan by their father who is originally from South Korea but who grew up in Taiwan, and who is today working as a music teacher, and their mother who is half South Korean, half Chinese. Motivated by her father, Jang began taking singing lessons at a very early age, and studied at a local elementary school while simultaneously attending a school of the performing arts.

Jang showed that she was talented in a number of fields such as acting and dancing, as well as playing a variety of sports including soccer and volleyball. She enrolled at a high school in Seoul in 2018 which she is currently attending, and isn’t now planning on pursuing a college degree after matriculation, but will be focusing on her career, primarily as a singer.

Career as a singer and the band IZONE

On 15 June 2018, the reality TV show “Produce 48” began airing on Mnet, as a collaboration between the AKB48 Group and the TV talent franchise Produce 101. It was launched with the goal to find 12 girls who would form a group, after the show ended on 31 August.

The people on the internet known as netizens (internet and citizen) chose IZONE for the name of the group – ‘IZ’ stands for ‘12’ and ‘ONE’ is for them as one group. 96 girls competed in the show.

It was announced in September 2018 that the group would no longer be managed by Stone Music and Pledis, and that Off the Record would be taking it over. The girls released their first extended play (EP) on 29 October 2018, entitled “Color*Iz”, and the song “La Vie en Rose” was its main song, and only a day later they performed in Seoul at the Olympic Hall, in a showcase concert “Color*Iz Show-Con” – reputedly, all tickets for the concert were sold in under one minute.

On 7 November, they competed in the show “M Countdown”, winning it thus becoming the group to win a TV show in the shortest time after launch, while they also hold the record for the highest number of copies of a debut EP sold on the first day of release, around 34,000. “La Vie en Rose” became a hit on the internet, as it was viewed around 4.5 million times on YouTube on the first day of its upload, while “Color*Iz” peaked at #2 on the Gaon Album Chart, and sold nearly 230,000 copies.

The girls went on to win several New Artist of the Year Awards at Mnet Asian Music Awards and Seoul Music Awards as well as at Golden Disc Awards.

They performed in Japan at the 2018 FNS Music Festival on 5 December, which was the first time they sang oversees, and a day later, IZONE signed a contract with Universal Music Japan EMI Records.

They performed in Japan at Tokyo Dome City Hall on 20 January 2019, and sang their first song in Japanese language called “Suki to Iwasetai”, reaching #2 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, as well as on the Oricon Singles Chart. The girls’ second EP, “Heart*Iz”, came out on 1 April 2019, reaching #1 on the Gaon Album Chart and the Oricon Overseas Album Chart, while it was certified platinum on 10 October, and eventually reached #6 on Billboard World Album Chart.

On 7 June, IZONE started their first tour in Seoul’s Jamsil Indoor Stadium, at which they sang their two new singles, “So Curious” and “Ayayaya”. During the tour, they sang in eight cities in five countries; they performed in the US for the first time on 6 July at KCON at Madison Square Garden, New York City and shortly afterwards the girls released their second Japanese song, “Buenos Aires”, which topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 Chart, and the Oricon Singles Chart. Their third Japanese song “Vampire” came out on 25 September, again topping the charts. The girls’ debut full-length album was scheduled for release for 11 November, however, the incident of Mnet vote manipulation investigation (when it was revealed that the girls for the group IZONE were chosen days before “Produce 48” aired its final episode) postponed it, and led to the release of their concert movie “Eyes on Me: The Movie”.

IZONE’s album was eventually released on 17 February 2020, entitled “Bloom*Iz”, breaking the record for the number of sold copies in its first week with over 355,000. On 15 June, they released their mini-album “Oneiric Diary”.

Since the launch of their career, the girls have worked with a number of brands and companies, including Skoolooks, Salewa and Overhit, and have been featured in many magazines, with one of the most notables being “Non-no”.

Love life and boyfriend

It is widely believed that Jang is too young to be dating, but there are rumors that she is currently in a relationship with her high school sweetheart, and that they have been dating for several months now.

However, it is widely known that the girls and boys from K-pop groups aren’t usually allowed by their agencies to date, because it might have a negative impact on the entire band and their reputation. Jang is also not allowed to drink, smoke nor party, the same as the other 11 girls in IZONE.

Jang has, however, spoken about the ideal type of a boy she would like to date. He would have to be taller than her and be sporting (if she could choose, he would be a soccer player) while he would also have to be caring and love animals. The boy should enjoy spending time in nature more than in the city.

Hobbies and interests

Jang likes to go shopping in her spare time, and her favorite color is pink, but she doesn’t usually buy pink clothes because she believes black and white look better on her.

She became interested in learning the English language when she was four, and by the time she began attending elementary school, she already knew how to speak it well, although her grammar was not that great. Jang has been taking dance lessons since the age of seven, and her favorite style is hip hop. One thing she likes to do is to wink fast – her current record is winking 63 times in 30 seconds.

She is keen on watching Hollywood movies, and her favorite actor and actress are Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, while some of her favorite movies are “Dear John”, “Letters to Juliet” and “Magic Mike”.

Age and height

Jang is 16 years old. She has long brown hair and brown eyes, while her height is 5ft 7ins (1.71m), and she weighs around 104lbs (47kgs). As of July 2020, Jang’s net worth is estimated at over $100,000, but rising steadily along with IZONE’s popularity.
