Childhood and education

WOODZ was raised as an only child in Seoul by his father, who is the owner of a Korean restaurant located in the Philippines, and his mother who is the owner of a travel agency and a Chinese restaurant – because of his parents’ work obligations, the family often moved around the country.

WOODZ grew up wanting to become a professional soccer player – he began practicing while attending elementary school in Brazil, and soon became a member of the Brazilian soccer club Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, competing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A. He progressed to become the main striker of the Sport Club Corinthians Paulista and was nicknamed Luizinho which would later motivate him to choose Luizy as his stage name. He left soccer aside after enrolling at the Reedley International School in Manila in the Philippines, where his father was working.

After a year in the Philippines WOODZ returned to Brazil, but as he was homesick he started watching the South Korean music show “Music Bank”, which persuaded him to return to South Korea and pursue a career as a singer. He studied at Hanlim Multi Art School’s Practical Dance Department and matriculated in 2016 – he continued his education at Dong-ah Institute of Media and Art’s Entertainment in Broadcasting Department before moving to Global Cyber University’s Entertainment and Media Department.

The group UNIQ

WOODZ attended more than 50 auditions at agencies such as JYP Entertainment and SM Entertainment, and was eventually accepted by YG Entertainment, where he started off as a trainee – he trained under them for a year and a half, before joining the boy group UNIQ together with Wang Yibo, Li Wehnah, Kim Sung-joo and Zhou Yixuan.

The boys debuted on 16 October 2014 with their song “Falling in Love” in the music show “M Countdown”, and on 23 October they released their second song “Born to Fight”. On 2 December, they began starring in their own three episode reality TV show “The Best Debut”.

Through January and February 2015, the boys began endorsing several brands, including Xtep and Mix-Box. Their first fan meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand on 7 March, but UNIQ wasn’t seen performing again until 22 April, when they sang the song “EOEO” which served as the lead single of their eponymous mini-album. On 23 April, they sang their new song “Listen to Me” at the KU Music Asian Music Awards, at which they won a Best New Artist Award. Their new digital album came out on 16 October entitled “Best Friend”, and to mark the end of 2015, they released their song “Happy New Year” on 28 December in collaboration with the girl group Cosmic Girls.

WOODZ

In March 2016, UNIQ released their new song “My Dream” which became the original soundtrack (OST) of the movie “MBA Partners”. On 19 January 2017, their new song “Happy New Year 2017” came out, and in April their two new songs entitled “Next Mistake” and “Never Left” were released – UNIQ hasn’t been very active since, and some of the boys have continued working on their solo careers.

WOODZ’s solo career

In early 2016, WOODZ competed in the rap show “Show Me the Money 5” and although he was eliminated early on in the show, he still attracted a lot of attention and fans, and thus launched Drinkcolor production crew together with NATHAN, ODDTOM and EDEN.

On 29 July, he launched his solo career under the name Luizy with his debut single “Recipe” and on 14 August, he released his second song “Baby Ride”. His new song “Eating Alone” came out in March 2017 which served as the OST for the variety program “Sing For You”.

It was announced in November 2017 that WOODZ would participate in the ICONIC SOUNDS’ songwriting camp and it is there that he met Sophia Pae, singer and a songwriter, with whom he would write and perform the song “Always” – it became the OST of the survival program “The Unit: Idol Rebooting Project”. In February 2018, he started using WOODZ as his stage name rather than Luizy, and began writing songs for other performers.

On 4 March 2019, WOODZ entered the survival program “Produce X 101” and finished fifth when the show ended on 19 July, thus becoming a member of the boy group X1 – they debuted on 27 August 2019 when they released their EP “Emergency: Quantum Leap”, but because of the controversy regarding voting manipulation, the group disbanded on 6 January 2020.

WOODZ continued to work on his solo career, and on 29 June 2020 released his debut mini-album “Equal”, with the song “Love Me Harder” as the lead single.

Love life and girlfriend

WOODZ hasn’t mentioned any girls he might have dated since the launch of his singing career, and it is known that most K-pop agencies do not allow their rookie artists to date because of how this might affect their groups’ popularity.

Nevertheless, WOODZ has talked about his ideal type of girl, that she would have to be attractive and how it would help if she was charismatic – he would make the first move, but wouldn’t mind if she took the lead.

There are rumors circulating the internet that he was once in a long-term relationship with a girl whom he met while studying in Brazil, and that the two dated for around a year before splitting ways after he decided to come back to South Korea – WOODZ hasn’t commented on the rumors.

As of August 2020, he is single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

WOODZ became interested in learning languages as his family moved several times – today he can speak Korean, Chinese, English, Portuguese and Tagalog.

He likes to play a variety of instruments, and his favorites are the guitar and the piano. In his spare time, WOODZ listens to American artists and prefers them over Asian artists – some of his favorites are Beyonce, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar.

He is keen on tasting various cuisines and can eat nearly anything.
