Childhood and family

Shin was raised an only child in South Korea by her father who is an engineer and her mother who is a housewife. She started dreaming about becoming a famous dancer at the age of six, and she was eight when her parents enrolled her at a dancing school.

After completing her elementary education in 2015, Shin enrolled at Hanlim Multi Art School’s Department of Practical Dance, where she continued working on her dancing skills and also began developing her singing voice.

Shin is a huge fan of the South Korean boy band GOT7, and while she was attending their fan meeting in 2016, she was noticed by a scout working for JYP Entertainment, who invited her to become a JYP trainee.

Career as a singer and the group ITZY

In 2017, Shin entered the competition “MIXNINE” organized by JTBC and although she ranked as one of the best girls, she was unable to win because the boys turned out to be overall winners.

In the same year, she appeared in the reality program “Survival Show” created by Stray Kids and Shin also made her debut film appearance in 2017 when she portrayed a supporting character in “The King”. She was offered to sign a contract with YG Entertainment under better conditions than she has with JYP Entertainment but Shin turned the offer down.

After Shin matriculated in 2019, she decided not to attend college but to focus on becoming a famous singer. Shin officially became a member of ITZY on 12 February 2019 – around 20 days after ITZY was announced by JYP – and that its other members would be Chaeryeong, Lia, Yeji, and Yuna.

They debuted with their album “It’z Different”, which had the song “Dalla Dalla” as its lead single and which became a huge success in both Asia and the US as it reached #2 on the World Digital Song Sales Chart, which is one of the best debuts on Billboard. it was seen on YouTube around 17 million times On the first day of its upload, and eventually became the fastest debut music video to gather over 100 million views. The fans were mostly attracted by the song’s mix of bass and future house sound as well by its ‘empowering lyrics’. Another song from the album called “Want It?” was also well-received, as it peaked at #8 on the World Digital Song Sales Chart and sold over 1,000 digital copies.

Only eight days after the band started performing, they competed in the South Korean music program “M Countdown”, winning it and becoming the fastest group to win such a show.

On 29 July 2019, ITZY released their debut extended play (EP) called “It’z Icy”, with “Icy” as its lead song, and two months later, it was announced by JYP Entertainment that the girls would start their world tour on 2 November from Jakarta, and would begin performing in the US in January 2020. In November and December 2019, “Dalla Dalla” continued to attract attention and on the Gaon Music Chart the song reached over 100 million streams, becoming certified platinum which was the first debut song of a K-pop group to achieve this since it was first introduced in April 2018.
