Childhood, parents and education
Rothy was raised in South Korea as an only child, by her father who is the owner of a small company, and her mother who is working at the same company as a secretary. Rothy became interested in music at the age of nine, and after her talent was noticed by her parents, they enrolled her at a school at which she practiced both singing and dancing.
After completing her elementary education, in 2014 Rothy enrolled into Hanlim Multi Arts School’s Practical Music Department in Seoul and around the same time she was signed to the agency Dorothy Company, and became its trainee. She matriculated from Hanlim in February 2018, and didn’t enroll at a college, but kept working on her solo career.
Career as a singer
Rothy released her first song called “Stars” before her official debut on 9 November 2017, while it was also released as a music video onto YouTube.
On 2 January 2018, she sang the original soundtrack (OST) “Baby Baby” for the drama series “Jugglers”, together with U-Kwon who is a member of the boy group Block B. In March 2018, Rothy worked with Dingo Music to release a new version of the song “It’s Okay”, in which she replaced the singer Heize. Rothy’s second single before her debut came out on 1 June 2018 called “Sullae”, followed by its music video which was uploaded onto YouTube. Less than a month later, she performed the OST “A Little Bit More” of the series “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” with Jinho, who is a member of the boy group “PENTAGON”.
Rothy’s debut mini-album entitled “Shape of Rothy” came out on 30 August 2018, consisting of “Stars” and “Sullae” and four other songs, while the song “Burning” served as the album’s lead single. She advertised the release of her album when she sang “Burning” in the musical TV show “M Countdown”, and was also invited to sing her song “Cloud” for the series “The Beauty Inside”, which was adapted from the eponymous movie in September 2018.
On 30 January 2019, Rothy released her new digital single “Blossom Flower”, and on 8 February was invited to sing the song “Rainbow” for the series “Romance Is a Bonus Book”.
She released her second mini-album “Color of Rothy” on 27 May 2019, with the song “Bee” as its lead single – four other songs were included in the mini-album: “Beautiful Days”, “Temperature”, “Blossom Flower” and “Bee (Inst.)”.
Rothy’s most recent work has been singing the OST for the TV series “Backstreet Rookie Part.4” in 2020.
Love life and boyfriend
Rothy is very secretive when it comes to her love life, and hasn’t commented on any boys she might have dated since the launch of her career – it is believed by many that Rothy won’t be dating anyone anytime soon.
Because relationships tend to have a negative impact on the careers of rookie artists, which is one of the reasons why most South Korean agencies do not allow their singers to date. However, there are rumors circulating the internet that Rothy was in a romantic relationship with her high school sweetheart, and that the two started dating in 2017 after having been friends for around a year. They were seen spending time together on multiple occasions, but after she launched her career as a singer, Rothy decided to end the relationship.
As of August 2020, she is single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.
Hobbies and other interests
Rothy likes to sing other people’s songs and make covers, more than she likes to sing her originals. She is keen on watching YouTube videos as soon as she wakes up, as it takes her time to get out of bed – her usual morning starts with a cup of coffee and several YouTube videos.
Rothy also likes to listen to other South Korean singers as well as some American performers, while her current favorite song is “Morning Glory” sang by Kehlani – she is also a huge fan of IU who is a South Korean singer and actress who launched her career in September 2008.
Rothy can eat a variety of foods, while some of her favorites are fries, chicken feet and Korean Blood Sausage Soup.
She is a bit of a shopaholic as she goes shopping for clothes at least two times a week – she usually wears black and white baggy clothes, but has stated that blue is actually her favorite color, while she dislikes purple because she thinks she doesn’t look good wearing it. Rothy also likes to wear hats.
She has admitted that she likes the attention she is receiving on her Instagram account, which is currently followed by almost 250,000 people.
In the future, Rothy would like to meat Sam Kim and work with him. She would like to sing in the US, and would enjoy travelling around Europe.
