Park Hye-Kyeong Bio

Park ‘Soyul’ Hye-Kyeong was born in Seoul, South Korea, on 15 May 1991 – her zodiac sign is Taurus and she holds South Korean nationality. She is a rapper and a singer, who gained recognition after she became the youngest member of the girl group Crayon Pop.

Early life and education

Soyul was raised in Seoul an only child by her father who was a taxi driver, and her mother who was once in the entertainment industry as well, and as an actress appeared in a couple of plays at a local theatre.

Motivated by her mother, Soyul started singing at a very early age, and after her talent was noticed by her parents, they found her a teacher who taught her how to sing and to play the guitar.

Soyul attended a local high school at which she was physically very active, as she played a variety of sports while excelling at soccer – her then-peers described her as ‘the most energetic one’. During her senior year at high school, Soyul uploaded a picture of herself onto the South Korean website Daum, and after the picture was seen by a scout of a modelling agency, she got to star in a commercial for Korean Neutrogena skin care products.

After matriculating in 2009, Soyul focused on her singing career, until six years later when she enrolled at Sungshin Women’s University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2019.

Career as a singer and the group Crayon Pop

Just a year after matriculation, Soyul became a member of the girl group Chic’6 Muscats – the girl disbanded shortly afterwards, and one of its members, Jina went on to join the girl group Bob Girls which was popular for a year, but eventually disbanded as well.

The agency Chrome Entertainment was established in May 2012, and Crayon Pop was the first girl group that the agency founded – the girls Soyul, Way, Choa, Geummi and Ellin debuted on 25 June with the release of their song “Bing Bing”. On 18 July, their debut full-length studio album called “Crayon Pop 1st Mini Album” came out, and was promoted in the show “Saturday Night”, followed by the girls’ appearance in the popular South Korean programs “Show Champion” and “M! Countdown”.

Due to the band’s huge initial popularity, their original TV series “Diary of Crayon Pop also began” started airing on 29 August for a period of three weeks. Their next single “Dancing Queen” came out in October, while they ended the year 2012 and started 2013 with their concert held in Shibuya in Japan.

In May 2013, Crayon Pop started marketing themselves in Japan, and in the same month, they welcomed the sixth member of their group, Arisa. To promote their new song “Bar Bar Bar”, the girls sang it in the streets of Dongdaemun for several days, before it was officially released on 13 June – after a month the song topped the Daum and Naver Charts – and the Melon Video Chart beating Ailee, Beast and 2Ne1 – and reached #2 on the Gaon National Single Chart, the girls’ best result in their career.

Crayon Pop became the most talked-about band in 2013, and the song “Bar Bar Bar” became an international success, with numerous covers having been uploaded onto YouTube, as well as many dance choreographies done to the song. On 30 August, the girls competed in the music show “Music Bank”, with “Bar Bar Bar” winning it, thus marking what turned out to be their only show win. They released their second full-length studio album called “The Streets Go Disco” on 26 September, with the lead song “Dancing Queen 2.0” – following its release, the girls were invited to star in the documentary film “Human Documentary”, which followed their everyday lives.
