Early life, family and education

Soyeon was raised in Seoul an only child, by her father who is an architect and her mother who is a lawyer. Her parents decided soon after she was born that she would be homeschooled, but they enrolled her at Kuryong Elementary School when she was seven years old, and at around the same time Jeon began attending a ballet school.

She excelled at ballet, winning many competitions, but after watching the South Korean boy group Big Bang sing on TV, she decided to quit dancing and eventually pursue a career as a singer. She started off by attending around 30 auditions, but didn’t pass any and wasn’t signed by any agency.

After these numerous unsuccessful tries, she started rapping, eventually testing her rap skills at an audition in 2014, and was finally picked by Cube Entertainment, becoming their trainee. After she matriculated from high school in 2016, Soyeon didn’t to pursue a college degree, but chose to work on her singing career.

Career as a solo singer

Soyeon was picked as the leader of Cube’s trainees in the reality survival program “Produce 101” in January 2016, and although she held 10th place until fifth episode, she eventually finished 20th, thus missing out on becoming a member of the girl group “I.O.I.” In July of the same year she entered the rap show “Unpretty Rapstar”, finishing as runner-up and thus featuring on three songs in its compilation album. She officially became a singer and rapper under Cube Entertainment on 29 December 2016, and made her debut around a year later on 5 November 2017, when she released the two songs which she also wrote, entitled “Idle Song” and “Jelly.

Soyeon released another song for LoL with the True Damage hip hop group, entitled “Giants” which they sang at the 2019 League of Legends World Championship, held in Paris, France.

Her group (G)I-DLE

It was announced by Cube Entertainment on 5 April 2018 that it would be launching the girl group (G)I-DLE, made up of So-yeon, Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Shuhua and Yuqi – So-yeon was chosen as the leader of the group as well as the main rapper. (G)I-dle stands for individuality (‘I’) of every member of the group (‘dle’).

The girls debuted on 2 May 2018 with their extended play (EP) “I Am”, with its lead track “Latata” – “Latata” became a huge hit, peaking at #5 on the Billboard World Albums Chart and #35 on Gaon Digital Chart, while the EP made it to #13 on the Gaon Album Chart. On 26 June, their new digital single came out called “Uh-Oh”, and it peaked at #22 on NetEase Cloud Music China, making (G)I-dle the only K-pop group on the chart. They made their debut performance in the US in July when they sang at the Javits Center in New York City, followed by their performance at Akasaka Blitz in Minato, Tokyo for which all the tickets were sold out in minutes – 1,000 tickets were put on sale while 15,000 people tried to buy one. On 31 July, the girls released their debut Japanese EP “Latata”, followed by its Japanese music video.

They went on to compete in the reality TV show “Queendom”, winning the first round with their song “Latata”, however, they finished last in the second round when they sang “Fire” by 2ne1.

They released their new EP on 6 April entitled “I Trust”, made up of five tracks with “Oh My God” as the lead single, and around the same time, (G)I-dle signed a contract with Republic Records, to help them make their way into the US market. With “Oh My God” the girls made their way onto the Scottish Singles Chart, becoming only the second female group to ever appear on it. On 23 June, (G)I-dle performed at KCON: TACT 2020 Summer, and used the opportunity to announce the release of their new EP “Oh My God” set for 26 August.

Love life and boyfriend

So-yeon hasn’t commented on any boys she might have dated since the launch of her singing career, probably because Cube Entertainment doesn’t allow its rookie artists to date, as this has proven in most cases to have a negative effect on the group’s popularity – besides dating, the girls from (G)I-dle also aren’t allowed to drink, smoke cigarettes or undergo plastic surgery.

However, there are rumors circulating the internet that So-yeon has been secretly seeing someone for the past one year, and several of her fans have stated to have seen her walking hand in hand with a mysterious boy in the streets of Seoul. Another rumor has it that some of the people who hate her have come up with these rumors, so that she might be let go from her group.
