Darren Wang Biography

Darren Wang (Wang Talu) was born in Taipei, Taiwan on 29 May 1991 – his zodiac sign is Gemini and he holds Taiwanese nationality. He is an actor, perhaps best known for his portrayal of the lead character Hsu Tai-Yu in the Taiwanese romantic comedy movie “Our Times” which came out in 2015, and which also starred Vivian Sung, Talu Wang and Dino Lee. It follows two friends who fall in love and the film was a hit in rest of Asia as well as in Taiwan, as it won five awards and was nominated for 10 others.

Education and early life

Darren was raised in Taipei as an only child, by his father who is a car mechanic and his mother who is teaching at a local high school. Darren grew up wanting to become a model, and was physically very active while attending high school, as he played a variety of sports including soccer and tennis. He became interested in acting while attending his senior year at the high school, and upon matriculation in 2008 he started attending auditions, winning his first role in the TV series “Mysterious Incredible Terminator”, portraying Yang Shegkai in the eight episodes, and this was enough for him to realize that he wanted to pursue a career as an actor and not to attend college.

Roles in TV series

In 2009, Darren appeared as young Lin Guangfu in “Latter Days”, before gaining recognition in 2010 when he appeared as Xiao Hai in the Taiwanese TV series “Gloomy Salad Days”, which starred Aaron Yan and Serena Fang, and which follows 12 students who all have a different life story. In the same year, Darren made cameo appearances in two series “Channel-X” and “Teenager’s Break Time”, before portraying the supporting character Da Ying in the series “Bei Ying” in 2011.

Some of his roles in series in the following years were in “High Heels and a Scalpel” in 2014, “Tou Kui Xin Shi” in 2015 and “Stairway to Stardom” in 2017, while he became famous after playing Hu Tian in the Chinese web series “Candle in the Tomb: My Ye Gui Shi” released in the same year, which starred Dong Jin, Da Zhao and Joe Chen, and is about an archaeologist who has to trust tomb raiders to help her find her lost father.

Some of Darren’s most recent roles in TV series have been in “Reset Life” in 2019, and “The Wolf” and “An Jing” in 2020.

Roles in movies

Darren made his debut film appearance in 2010 when he portrayed Lu Lu in “In Case of Love”, and the following years saw him play supporting characters in “Love’s Two Faces” in 2012, “A Choo” in 2014 and “7 Love Design” in 2014.

After gaining recognition for his performance in “Our Times” in 2015, he was invited in 2016 to star in the Taiwanese drama “10,000 Miles”, which also starred Sean Huang and Megan Lai, and is about a teenage runner who falls in love with Ellie, his coach.

His next critically acclaimed performance was in the Chinese fantasy adventure movie “Legend of the Naga Pearls” which was directed by Yang Lee, then in 2018, Darren starred in two Chinese movies – the action movie “A Better Tomorrow 2018” and the drama “The Rookies”.

Some of Darren’s most recent roles in movies have been in “Fall in Love at First Kiss”, “The Last Wish”, and “Super Me”. He has also appeared in two variety shows – “Give Me Five” and “Produce Camp 2020” in 2017 and 2020 respectively.

Darren is also a bit of a singer, and has been credited with singing “Big Brother” and “Playing My Beloved Fold Lute” in “Railroad Tigers” as well as the song “Proud Youths” in “Give Me Five”. Darren’s most recent singing performance was in “The Last Wish” in 2019, in which he sang “We Won’t Be Sad in the End”.

Darren won his first two awards in 2015 – a GQ Man of the Year Fashion Award and an iQiyi All-Star Carnival Newcomer Film Award, followed by his China Music Award for Popular Star in 2016. He won an APAN Star Award for Rising Star in the same year, and in 2017 a 2nd Fashion Up Award for Popularity – Male, Men’s UNO YOUNG Red Award for Best Actor, and a GQ Man of the Year Award for Fashionista of the Year.

In 2018, Darren was nominated for a Jackie Chan Action Movie Award for Best New Actor in Action, and in 2019 for an 11th Macau International Movie Festival for Best Supporting Actor.

Darren has been linked to several starlets since he became popular in 2015, and he was even linked to Kang Hanna, a famous South Korean actress, after the two were seen together on several occasions.Today, Darren is rumored to be dating Ivy Hsieh who is a make-up artist and has been seen on a couple of occasions spending the night at her house, which was enough for his fans to start rumors on the internet that the two are in a relationship.

Ivy once commented on Instagram about how Darren once promised to call her back in 30 minutes and then became unreachable (blocked her), and she asked him whether he really thought of her as ‘a pushover’. According to Ivy, Darren was already in a relationship with another girl while he was with her, and according to rumors, the two broke up because of Ivy, while she’s deleted all her posts related to Darren.

As of July 2020, Darren is single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Darren is an avid basketball player, and spends a lot of his free time playing with his friends and acting colleagues.

He is a huge fan of animated TV series, with his favorite being “Tom & Jerry” and he’s uploaded a picture of its director Gene Deitch after he passed away in April 2020. He’s also keen on watching Hollywood films, with some of his favorites being “Shutter Island”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Inception”. He likes to travel, and has been all around the world to shoot for his movies and TV series while two of his favorite places out of those he has visited are Paris in France and New York City in the US. He is a lover of animals and has a pet cat.

Darren is interested in fashion, and goes shopping at least once a week which makes him a bit of a shopaholic.
