Childhood, family and education

Soojin was raised an only child in Bongdam-eup by her father who is a police officer, and her mother who is a hair stylist. Her parents worked a lot and Soojin was often left home alone where she would watch K-pop groups perform on TV, and dream about becoming a famous singer one day.

It was while attending elementary school that Soojin realized singing was her call and upon completing elementary education, she enrolled at Korea Arts High School at which she practiced her vocal skills and also learned how to dance, rap and act. She matriculated in 2016, and spent the next two years begging her father to allow her to become a K-pop singer, as both her parents wanted her to attend college and obtain her degree – she eventually convinced her dad, and went on to become a trainee under Cube Entertainment.

While still attending high school, Soojin was a member of the girl group Vividiva, but she left before they had a chance to debut.

Career as a singer and her group (G)I-dle

Soojin became a Cube Entertainment trainee on 9 September 2017, and she debuted with the girl group (G)I-dle on 2 May 2018 with their first extended play (EP) “I Am” and its lead single “Latata”. The group comprised six girls: Soojin, Miyeon, Soyeon, Minnie, Shuhua and Yuqi, most of whom were already active in the music industry – Soyeon was competing in the music program “Produce 101” but didn’t get to become a member of the girl group I.O.I, Miyeon was signed to YG Entertainment from 2010 to 2015, and Minnie featured in the album “Dance Party” by Line Friends.

The girls’ debut EP became a huge hit, peaking at #13 on the Gaon Albums Chart, while its lead single reached #5 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, and #35 on the Gaon Digital Chart. On 22 May, (G)I-dle achieved their first show victory in “The Show”, and on 5 June they peaked at #36 on the Billboard Social 50. They held their first small concert on 6 August, and on the same day two flash mobs performed to their song “Latata” at Washington Square Park and Times Square. Their debut digital single came out on 14 August entitled “Hann (Alone)”, and topped several charts in only two days such as Genie, Olleh Music and Bugs – it peaked at #2 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales.

They won a music show for the second time on 29 August when they competed in “Show Champion” with their song “Hann”, and a week later performed at KCON in Thailand. By the end of 2018, the girls had received awards at several events such as Gaon Chart Music, Golden Disc, and Asia Artist Awards among other events.

Their second EP came out on 26 February 2019 entitled “I Made”, made up of five songs including the “Senorita” which served as the lead track. Their second digital single followed on 26 June entitled “Uh-Oh”, and it peaked at #22 on NetEase Cloud Music China, making the girls the only K-pop group to appear on the chart.

They made their debut US performance in July when they sang at KCON New York, and upon returning to Asia sang at Tokyo’s Mainabi Blitz Akasaka, with tickets sold out in minutes after being put up for sale on the internet.

On 31 July, they released their debut Japanese EP “Latata”, then competed in the reality TV show “Queendom”, winning the first round with their song “Latata”, however, they finished last in the second round when they sang 2ne1’s song “Fire”. In September, their first fan meeting was held at Seoul’s Yes24 Live Hall called “Welcome to the Neverland” – all tickets were sold in less than two minutes.

On 4 October, the girls sang at the On Stage Jakarta in Indonesia alongside other famous performers and groups such as ATEEZ, Rich Brian and others. A day later, they competed in the music show “Immortal Songs 2”, singing their single “Put it Straight (Nightmare Version)”. Their new EP came out on 25 October entitled “Queendom Final Comeback” with the song “Lion” as its lead single – it took “Lion” a month to become a hit, and to peak at #5 on the World Digital Song Sales, as well as at #19 on the Gaon Digital Chart. To mark the end of 2019, (G)I-dle sang at a New Year party held in Tainan City, Taiwan.

In February 2020, the girls embarked on their first world tour – “I-Land: Who Am I Tour” – during which they were supposed to perform in 32 cities around the globe, however, the tour had to be cancelled due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. In March, they became the first K-pop artists to sing at 2020 Twitch Stream Aid organized to gather money for those suffering from coronavirus. They released their new EP “I Trust” comprising six tracks on 6 April, the song “Oh My God” its lead single, and on the same day signed a contract with Republic Records, which was to help them make their way into the US market.

The EP became a hit, topping the Gaon Album Chart and peaking at #4 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, while its lead single won the girls awards in four shows including “Show! Music Core” and “Music Bank”.

On 15 May, they released the English version of their hit song “Latata”, and a month later the girls sang at KCON: TACT 2020 SUMMER, together with 31 other performers. On 5 July, they held a live online concert “I-Land: Who Am I”, and it was recently announced that (G)I-dle would release their new Japanese EP “Oh My God” on 26 August; also they will release two new Korean albums by the end of 2020.

Love life and dating

It is widely known that Soojin’s agency doesn’t allow her or the other (G)I-dle girls to date, however, Soojin apparently ignored her agency’s rules in July 2020, when it was reported that she was in a relationship with Hui, who is a member of the boy group Pentagon. The two were seen by their fans on multiple occasions, and after investigating the situation, Cube Entertainment confirmed that the two were indeed romantically linked. They broke-up a week later, believed to have been forced by their agencies because if they didn’t, their contracts would mostly likely have been terminated – this is what happened to E’Dawn from Pentagon after he announced that he was in a relationship with HyunA from the girl group Wonder Girls.

As of August 2020, Soojin is single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

Soojin likes to dance jazz, motivated by her mother to learn it when she was six years old – her mother is a huge fan of jazz music, which was often played in their house when Soojin was still very young.

She is interested in martial arts and Soojin practiced Taekwondo for multiple years while she was a teenager.

Soojin is a very good cook and is known as the mother of the group (G)I-dle because she takes care of the girls and cooks for them – she is also very good at doing make-up and usually helps Yuki with her eyebrows.

She is a huge lover of travel, and is hoping to one day travel all around the world.
