Childhood, education and family

Minnie was raised in Bangkok alongside her older twin brothers Mac and Mic by their mother who is a musician, and their father who is a piano teacher – nearly everyone in the family knows how to play the piano, which is why Minnie started taking piano lessons at the age of four, while she started practicing her singing skills when attending kindergarten. One of her brothers completed his education and obtained his Master’s degree from a university in London, England.

Minnie attended Wattana Wittaya Academy at which she was very active as she played soccer and tennis, and was also a member of the school’s drama club, appearing in many plays performed there. She simultaneously attended G-Vocal Studio school, at which she practiced singing and playing the piano and the guitar – the school is very popular and has been attended by many famous Asian musicians, including Sorn who is a member of the group CLC.

Minnie matriculated from Wattana Wittaya in 2015, and then wanted to attend college to study communication art so that she could work in movie production, however, she became a singer and decided to focus solely on her singing career.

Singing career and the band (G)I-DLE

In 2018, Cube Entertainment announced they were forming a new girl group which would be called (G)I-DLE – their fans weren’t happy with the initially planned title for the group ‘Idle’ – it was also announced that the members would be Minnie, Miyeon, Soyeon, Soojin and Shuhua. Prior to the launch of the group, Soyeon was competing in the show “Produce 101” but didn’t make it into the girl group I.O.I. which was founded by the winners – she also competed in the rap show “Unpretty Rapstar”, before launching her solo career. From 2010 to 2015, Miyeon was signed to YG Entertainment but she left for unknown reasons related to her debut, and Soojin was previously signed to DN Entertainment and was a member of the girl group Vividiva.

Minnie’s voice could have been heard in several songs on the album “Dance Party” by Line Friends.

The group’s debut extended play (EP) came out on 2 May 2018 entitled “I Am”, with the song “Latata” as its lead single – “Latata” became a hit and was seen nearly six million times on YouTube in the first week after it was uploaded, and it reached #35 on the Gaon Digital Chart. The EP peaked at #13 on the Gaon Album Chart and #5 on Billboard World Albums Chart. Only 20 days after the girls debuted, they won the South Korean music TV program “The Show”, then on 6 August 2018, (G)I-DLE held their small debut solo concert, and a flash-mob was organized at both Times Square and Washington Square Park that performed their song “Latata”.

They released their debut digital single on 14 August called “Hann (Alone)”, and in only 24 hours the song was seen around five million times on YouTube – it also topped several Thai music charts such as Olleh Music, Genie and Bugs, and reached #2 on Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart. (G)I-DLE performed at KCON Thailand in September, and by the end of the year had won several awards, including an Asia Artist Award, Gaon Chart Music Award and a Melon Music Award among many others.

Their second EP came out on 26 February 2019 called “I Made”, consisting of five songs with “Senorita” as its lead single.  They followed their second digital single “Uh-Oh”, which peaked at #22 on the NetEase Cloud Music China Chart – the girls were the only K-pop group to appear on the chart.

They made their debut US performance in July when they sang at KCON at the Javits Center in New York City, before holding a live showcase on 23 July at the Mainabi Blitz Akasaka – more than 1,000 tickets were sold, while close to 15,000 people applied to come and listen to (G)I-DLE.

They released the Japanese version of their song “Latata” on 31 July, then went on to compete in the reality survival show “Queendom”, created by Mnet, and won the first round with their song “Latata”, however, the girls finished last in the second round when they performed 2ne1’s song “Fire”. In September 2019, their first fan meeting was held at Seoul’s Yes24 Live Hall called “Welcome to Neverland” – all tickets for the meeting were sold in around two minutes.

On 4 October, they performed at Spotify On Stage Jakarta, alongside five other performers and bands such as ATEEZ and Rich Brian, and only a day later sang in the reality TV competition “Immortal Songs 2”, finishing in third place overall. They announced the release of their new EP “Queendom Final Comeback” with the release of the song “Lion” on 25 October, and finished 2019 with a performance at the 2020 Tainan Christmas & New Year Eve Party in Taiwan.

After the outbreak of the coronavirus, (G)I-DLE was invited to perform at the 12-hour charity livestream show 2020 Twitch Stream Aid, which was organized to help gather money for those suffering from COVIC-19. Their third EP made up of five songs came out on 6 April entitled “I Trust”, with the song “Oh My God” as the lead track – shortly after the release of the EP, the girls signed a contract with Republic Records to bring their music to the US. “I Trust” became a huge hit, mostly in South Korea, and peaked at #1 on Gaon Album Chart and #4 on Billboard World Albums Chart, while it also reached #97 on the Scottish Single Chart, the first K-pop group to ever appear on the chart.

On 15 May, the girls released their English version of the song “Latata”, and then performed at KCON: TACT 2020 Summer. On 5 July 2020, (G)I-DLE held an online concert called “2020 (G)I-DLE Online Concert I-Land: Who Am I”.
