Who is Lee Gahyeon (Dreamcatcher)?

Lee Gahyeon was born in Seongnam, South Korea on 3 February 1999 – her zodiac sign is Aquarius and she holds South Korean nationality. She is a singer, dancer and a rapper, perhaps best known for being a member of the girl group Dreamcatcher.

Early life, family and education

Gahyeon was raised in Seongnam as an only child by her father who is teaching math at a local high school, and her mother who is working at a local supermarket.

While she was still  young Gahyeon, spent a lot of her free time watching movies and shows on TV, and after she saw a K-pop group perform for the first time, she fell in love with music and decided she was going to become a famous singer one day.

She began taking singing lessons at a school for the performing arts, and attended a local high school, while she also got the opportunity to study in the Philippines for several months. Gahyeon matriculated in 2017, and then decided not to enroll at a college but to focus on her music career, and her group Dreamcatcher.

Career

The group Dreamcatcher debuted as MINX on 18 September 2014, with the release of their first single “Why Did You Come to My Home?” – the original five members of the group were Jiu, Dami, Yoohyeon, Siyeon and Sua. They performed live for the first time at the Oak Valley Summertime Festival, when they sang their new song “Action”.

MINX’s debut extended play (EP) “Love Shake” was released in July 2015, and they then went on to compete in two music shows – “Show Champion” and “The Show”.

After over a one-year hiatus, it was announced by Happy Face Entertainment that the girls would be re-debuting as Dreamcatcher, with two new members Gahyeon and Handong. They released their debut single album “Nightmare” on 13 January 2017, with the song “Chase Me” as its lead single – a week later, the girls appeared in the music show “M Countdown”. Their second single album came out on 5 April entitled “Fall Asleep in the Mirror” together with its lead single “Good Night”.

On 27 July, their new EP came out called “Prequel” comprising six songs including its title track “Fly High” – the EP peaked at #5 on the Billboard World Albums Chart as well as at #1 on the US iTunes K-Pop Top 100 Chart. It was announced on 1 August by Happy Face Entertainment that the girls would embark on their first world tour. All the girls from Dreamcatcher joined the music show “MIX NINE” on 3 October to ‘show viewers a new side of themselves’ but several girls had to leave the show before it ended, to go on a tour of Brazil. By the end of 2017, the girls peaked at #19 on Billboard Best K-pop Songs of 2017: Critics’ Picks, and at #3 on the Billboard Best New K-pop Acts in 2017.

On 12 January 2018, the girls released their anniversary single “Full Moon” together with its video – it became a hit charting on the iTunes Top 100 K-pop Chart in multiple countries while it also peaked at #16 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart. A day after the single’s release, the girls attended their fan meeting held at Sogang University’s Mary Hall Grand Theatre. They embarked on a European tour in February, visiting many big cities such as London in England, Amsterdam in The Netherlands and Paris in France among others.

Their new EP came out on 10 May entitled “Escape the Era” comprising six songs including the title track “You and I” – the EP topped the Hanteo Albums Chart and the China’s Yinyuetai while it also reached #3 on the Gaon Albums Chart and #7 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. On 27 July, Dreamcatcher embarked on their new tour – “Welcome to the Dream World in Latin America” – starting in Buenos Aires in Argentina and finishing it in Panama City on 5 August. The girls signed a contract with Pony Canyon on 15 July announcing their Japanese debut; their new EP came out on 20 September 2018 entitled “Alone in the City”, and on 21 November they debuted in Japan with the release of their first Japanese single, “What”.

Dreamcatcher’s new EP “The End of Nightmare” was released on 13 February, with its lead single “PIRI”, and on the same day the girls’ agency Happy Face Entertainment changed its name to DreamCatcher Company. In March, the girls went on a tour around Asia to promote their new EP, visiting cities such as Jakarta and Manila as well as Seoul –but didn’t get to perform in Jakarta for unknown reasons. On 11 September, they released their debut Japanese studio album “The Beginning of The End”, followed a week later by their Korean album “Raid of Dream”. In October and November the girls toured around Europe, performing in cities such as London in England, Milan in Italy and Berlin in Germany, then after a brief return to South Korea, they went on to tour around the US in December, visiting cities such as Los Angeles in California, Chicago in Illinois and Dallas in Texas.

On 18 February, Dreamcatcher released their full-length Korean album “Dystopia: The Tree of Language” comprising eight songs. Their new Japanese single came out on 11 March entitled “Endless Night”, then in May the girls collaborated with the female singer AleXa and the Korean boy group IN2IT on their single “Be The Future”, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining one’s hygiene during the coronavirus. On 15 June, Dreamcatcher released their single “R.O.S.E BLUE” which served as the original soundtrack of the mobile game “Girl Café Gun”.

On 4 July, they performed at the online concert Global Streaming Into The Night & Dystopia, and most recently, on 17 August they released their next EP “Dystopia: Lose Myself”, with its lead single “BOCA” reaching six million views on YouTube in only two days.

Love life and relationships

Gahyeon doesn’t normally talk about her love life, and this is believed to be because her agency doesn’t allow her or other Dreamcatcher members to date, because of how this might lose the group many fans and cause controversy. However, she has talked about her ideal type of a man, stating that she doesn’t have a specific type in mind, but is looking for someone who has a beautiful smile, is funny and often tell jokes. The boy/man should also have a good voice, meaning a strong male voice which could be soft while he’s talking to her.

There are rumors circulating the internet that Gahyeon was in a relationship with a boy while she was attending high school, and that they were together for two years before splitting ways for unknown reasons.

As of August 2020, she is single, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.

Hobbies and other interests

According to her group members, Gahyeon is very smart and is very good at math, while she also has a great memory, and is able to remember all the details regarding the girls’ schedule.

She is a lover of animals with dogs being her favorites, and she always urges her friends from Dreamcatcher to go visit zoos while on their tours. She likes to visit amusement parks too, but is afraid of the rollercoasters.

Gahyeon likes to taste various cuisines and her favorite is Japanese.

She is physically active as she has several training sessions at the gym each week, and is also following a strict diet.

In her spare time, Gahyeon likes to watch Hollywood movies, and her favorite actor and actress are Ryan Gosling and Amanda Seyfried, while some of her favorite movies are “The Notebook”, “Letters to Juliet” and “Dear John” – all actually based on books written by Nicholas Sparks.

Appearance, age and weight

Gahyeon’s age is 21. She has brown hair which she dyes pink and her eyes are green. She is 5ft 3ins (1.6m) tall and her weight is around 100lbs (45kgs).

As of August 2020, her net worth has been estimated at over $150,000.
