Childhood, father and education

Dong hyuk was raised in Seoul alongside his younger sister by their father, who was a car mechanic, but who died when Donghyuk was eight years old, and their mother who is working as a nurse at a hospital.

Donghyuk was one of the most intelligent boys at his high school, and his peers couldn’t understand why he wanted to become a singer, as it seemed that he could have become whatever he wanted due to his intelligence.

He was physically active while attending high school, as he played soccer for the school’s team while he also played basketball and tennis – he spent a year living in the US, after joining a student exchange program.

He matriculated in 2016, then didn’t pursue a college degree to the surprise of everyone who knew him, choosing rather to focus on his career as a singer.

Career as a singer and the group YG iKON

Donghyuk competed in the JYP Trainee Search in March 2012, winning it thus becoming a JYP trainee for three years, before iKON officially debuted on 15 September 2015 with their single “My Type”, with its members B. I. (former leader who is no longer a member of the group), Donghyuk, Ju-ne, Chanwoo, Bobby, Yunhyeong and Jinhwan. Prior to the launch of the group, all members were already active in the music industry.

On 26 September, they competed in the show “Music Core” and winning it, while their debut single “My Type” released earlier that month steadily became a hit on the internet, eventually winning a triple crown on the Gaon Chart. On 1 October 2015, iKON released the first half of their debut album “Welcome Back”, made up of six tracks and entitled “Debut Half Album” – a week later the boys performed at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Arena with all 13,000 tickets being sold out. They went on to compete in the music show “Inkigayo”, winning that as well, while they also won “M Countdown” on 8 October.

Many fan meetings were organized in October 2015 in Japanese cities, such as Tokyo, Fukuoka and Osaka, and by the end of October, the boys were awarded a MelOn All-Kill Popularity Award.

On 16 November, two new songs were released entitled “Apology” and “Anthem”, while their full debut album “Debut Full Album” came out on 24 December.

They performed in Japan for the first time on 13 January 2016, with the Japanese versions of their songs from their debut album – the Japanese version of “Welcome Back” came out on the same day, peaked at #2 on the Oricon Weekly Chart, and won them two 58th Japan Record Awards for New Artist and Best New Artist.

It was announced on 17 March 2016 that the boys would be touring around Asia, performing in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia among many other countries, and they then embarked on their Japanese arena tour in July, entitled “iKon Japan Tour 2016”.

The boys were supposed to perform once in Tokyo during the tour, but two more dates were added because of the demand for tickets. iKON released their digital single “#WYD” on 30 May, and it peaked at #3 on the Gaon Digital Chart. On 28 September, their debut original Japanese song came out, entitled “Dumb & Dumber” (unrelated to the eponymous movie) – the song topped the Oricon Weekly Single Album Chart as well as the Oricon Daily Single Album Chart.

They were mentored by Psy in July 2016, when they competed in the survival show “Heroes of Remix”, winning the first three weeks, however, because of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense problem, the boys didn’t appear in the show’s final episodes.

At the end of 2016, they won a China Music Award for Asian Most Popular Korean Group, a Netease Attitude Award for Best Group, as well as a QQ Music Award for both Album of the Year and Best New Force Group.

In 2017 they went on their first dome tour in Japan; starting in February the boys performed at the Kyocera Dome as well as at Seibu Prince Dome, making them the fastest K-pop group to perform in a dome in Japan after their debut. Their new album was announced on 2 March 2017, but took it around a year to be released. Meantime on 22 May 2017, the boys released the first single from the new album called “New Kids: Begin”.

Their second full-length album came out on 25 July 2018, entitled “Return” and made up of 12 songs with “Love Scenario” as its lead single – the single peaked at #1 on the Gaon Weekly Chart where it stayed for a month and a half, while it also peaked at #1 on the Gaon Digital Chart. In August 2018, their debut extended play (EP) came out entitled “New Kids: Continue”, followed in October by their second EP – “New Kids: The Final”.

It was reported on 12 July 2019 that B.I. had left the group, after it was revealed that he tried to purchase LSD and marijuana from a drug dealer in 2016.

iKON’s third EP was released on 6 February 2020, entitled “I Decide”.
