Cho Miyeon was born in South Korea on 31 January 1997 – her zodiac sign is Aquarius and she holds South Korean nationality. Cho is a singer who is currently a member of the K-pop girl group (G)I-dle, while she gained recognition after it was revealed that the popular South Korean group 2NE1 made up of four members was initially meant to be made up of five members, but Cho was let go from the group before they debuted.
Childhood and education
Cho was raised in South Korea an only child by her father who is a musician, and who has been her main inspiration since she was a child, and her mother who is a housewife.
Cho’s father first noticed she was a talented singer when she was five years old, and so enrolled her at a school of the performing arts where Cho had an opportunity to learn how to sing, play the violin, the guitar and the piano. Upon matriculation in 2015, she enrolled at a music academy where she learned how to produce as well as compose music, and graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Career as a singer and her band (G)I-dle
Cho launched her singing career in 2016 when she signed a contract with Cube Entertainment, and in September toured with Seoulong around Canada, while she was also featured in his music video “You”, which was released in 2017.
On 5 April 2018, Cube Entertainment announced that it was creating a girl group (G)I-dle made up of Cho, Soyeon, Soojin, Shuhua and Minnie. The girl’s released their debut extended play (EP) “I Am” on 2 May 2018, with their song “Latata” as its lead single – “Latata” became a hit on the internet, as it gathered nearly six million views in its first week. The EP reached #5 on Billboard World Albums Chart as well as #13 on the Gaon Album Chart. Their debut digital single was released on 14 August entitled “Hann (Alone)”, and was a huge success as it was viewed nearly five million times on YouTube in its first 24 hours, and placed #2 on Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart, then in September 2018, the girls performed in Thailand at KCON.
(G)I-dle’s second extended play “I Made” came out on 26 February 2019, made up of five tracks with “Senorita” as its lead single, and on 26 June, the girls’ second digital single called “Uh-Oh” was released. Just a week before they performed at KCON in New York City. On 31 July, they released their first Japanese EP “Latata”, and on 25 October, (G)I-dle announced their third EP “Queendom Final Comeback” with the release of their song “Lion”, which reached #5 on the World Digital Song Sales Chart.
In January 2020, the girls announced their first tour around the world called “I-Land: Who Am I Tour”, and that they would be performing in 32 cities.
However, because of the outbreak of the coronavirus the tour was postponed, as well as their new album, but on 26 March they were the first K-pop girls to participate in the Twitch Stream Aid, which streamed for 12 straight hours to raise money for those suffering from coronavirus. Their third extended play “I Trust” came out on 6 April, made up of five songs including their English version of “I Trust”.
It is expected that (G)I-dle will release two more albums by 2021.
Cho and BLACKPINK
It has been reported that Cho was removed from the band because she was caught spending time with Jung Jin Hyung while they were travelling in Japan together – Cho’s agency as well as many others don’t allow their rookie singers to date, and because of Cho’s decision to show herself in public with Jung Jin Hyung, she was removed from the group.
Boyfriend and love life
Cho’s relationship with Jeong Jin Hyung had a negative effect on both of their careers, as he was let go from his agency, and is today working as a solo artist signed to the agency SFR Entertainment.
After the two were noticed by their fans for the first time, they decided to stay together even though Cho was removed from BLACKPINK and lost the contract he had back then, however, after Cho became a member of (G)I-dle, she focused solely on singing and didn’t want to risk her career by dating Jeong, thus splitting from him. Not only does her agency forbid her to date, but Cho also isn’t allowed to drink, drive, smoke, go clubbing or have plastic surgery.
She has been single since she debuted with (G)I-dle, hasn’t married and doesn’t have children.
Hobbies and interests
Cho is very stylish and is keeping up with the newest fashion trends, often uploading pictures onto her Instagram account, and in her captions she gives her fans advice related to make-up and clothes. She is a huge fan of dancing, and has uploaded a video of her twerking on the internet which quickly became a hit, and now most people from Cube Entertainment know Cho for her amazing twerking skills. She likes to travel and has been to several European countries to perform with her group members, visiting cities such as London, England and Paris, France; Cho has also been to the US on several occasions, to perform and to visit her friends and family.
She is also sporting, as she has several training sessions at the gym each week, and some of the sports she enjoys playing are tennis and soccer. Cho likes to watch movies in her spare time, and her favorite actor and actress are Leonardo DiCaprio and Anne Hathaway, while some of her favorite movies are “Titanic”, “Shutter Island” and “One Day”.
